Salt Lake Sector V Celebrates Earth Day 2017 With Green NGOs, Social Enterprises, Environmentalists, Corporates and Industry Bodies

Sector V Salt Lake Kolkata celebrated Earth Day with a variety of live activities and nature exhibition on Friday, April 21, at Infinity Benchmark to engage the community in the awareness programme to better understand and protect our home planet.

The 2nd year celebration of Earth Day at Sector V Salt Lake was observed through a day-long exhibition by Social Enterprises and NGOs, recognizing organizations of Salt Lake Sector V who are contributing in the field of green, live demonstration by nature clubs of a few Kolkata Schools, and live workshops on waste management and waste craft. More than 100 companies came together to gift 200+ plants to show their support toward a greener earth. Special mention to companies like Capital Numbers, On Process, Abzooba, Rebecca Technologies, Innoda Solutions, Infinity, Lions Calcutta Greater Vidya Mandir for gifting plants.

The welcome speech was delivered by Aninda Das, Corporate Communications Head, Infinity. “Earth Day is not any single individual’s initiative or any 1 company is driving it. The Salt Lake Sector V Earth Day is about every individual and community standing together for the environment. It is the world’s largest environmental movement and we, at the salt lake sector V, a community which comprises of 500 plus companies and 100,000 plus professionals have joined hands for this global movement to make this Earth a better place”, Aninda said. He further thanked the Sector V community for coming together to join the movement.

Panel Discussion by Dignity Foundation

The event started with a panel discussion by Dignity Foundation, an organization that helps senior citizens lead life actively through various productive aging and social support services. The session had 4 senior members of the Foundation discussion on “The proper use of science is not to conquer nature but to live in it”. Various aspects of how global warming is affecting the lives of senior citizens and how it can be lowered to help build a greener world and offer a healthy life was deliberated.

The Earth Day 2017 event was inaugurated by Shri. Debashis Sen, Additional Chief Secretary, Govt. of West; Chairman of HIDCO & NDITA; Mr. Ravindra Chamaria, CMD, Infinity Group; Mr. S. Radhakrishnan, President, Salt Lake Sector V Stakeholder’s Association, Mr. Manjit Nayak, Joint Director, STPI; Mr. Nirupam Chaudhuri, Regional Head, NASSCOM; Ms. Sarmila Datta Choudhuri, TCS; Mr. Anirudh Mathuria, Vice President & Country Manager, IXIA Technologies by watering plants.

The event was also attended by Ms. Shakuntala Ghosh, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council, Kolkata; Mrs. Saswati Sen, Regional Head, WWF; Ms. Neela Majumdar & Mr. Navonil Das from Earth Day Network, Ms. Suparna Mitra, Head Kolkata Chapter, Dignity Foundation.

Winners of Salt Lake Sector V 2017 Green Awards

One of the most exciting parts of the event was the Salt Lake Sector V 2017 Green Awards. This was the first time corporates from Sector V were recognized for their fantastic work toward supporting green. The awards were won by TCS, IBM, Cognizant, Wipro, Vehere, SENSES, Middleway Organics, IXIA, Sportiz, Infinity and Naba Diganta.

NGOs and Social Enterprizes being Recognized for their Green Contribution

This year NGOs and Social Enterprises were given a platform to showcase their products/services to the salt lake sector v corporate community. WWF, Earth Day Network, Nature Mate, Green for Life Foundation, Dignity Foundation, SAFE, Middle Way Organics, Hulladek, AdMyBin, Best out of Waste, Natureway Organic Fresh, Green Legion, Sasha, Wing green, Pallishree, Life Project 4 Youth, Ankur Kala, Shuktara Cakes, Herbal Collection, Elder Ease, and Saatvik Vastra took part in this event.

Birla High School, Lions Calcutta Greater Vidya Mandir, and Shri Shikshayatan School displayed and gave live demonstrations of their nature club activities to build a better world through planting trees, reducing pollution and rainwater harvesting.

Anant Education Initiative and Udayan Care also participated in this event and took a pledge to continue with the great work.

The event was organized by Salt Lake Sector V Community. Industry bodies like NASSCOM, IGBC Kolkata, WWF, Earth Day Network, Calcutta Management Association (CMA), Salt Lake Sector V Stakeholders’ Association supported the initiative.
